Students should take the PSAT in October of their Junior year. This is the only administration of the PSAT that counts toward the National Merit Scholarship competition. Many schools allow students to take the PSAT in their 9th and 10th grade years, too. Students should take these administrations of the PSAT for practice.

The National Merit Program recognizes students who perform in the top of their peer group on the PSAT. There are several tiers of recognized students: Commended Students, Semifinalists, Finalists, and Scholarship winners. Even more than the scholarship itself, the recognition is an honor that all universities recognize and respect!
